The old railway I, The old railway II, The old railway III

Oil on drywall

This triptych depicts the same perspective onto downtown Rotterdam at different timestamps after the 1940 bombing of the city. Though at first glance the paintings might not make it obvious that they depict the exact same perspective over the city, there are elements which indicate this after a closer look, such as the churches and the railway. By placing these three paintings next to each other, I wished to evoke the temporality of the urban landscape. The horizons of all three paintings are aligned to resemble the timeline of the rising of buildings that make the city’s skyline.

This painting was exhibited in 2024 as part of the show Landscapes towards the end of the Maas.
